Stephen Mills

Tenor Stephen Mills is in demand throughout the classical repertoire and is sought after for both Oratorio and Opera, as well as on the concert platform. He studied at the Royal College of Music where he was awarded a Masters in Performance with Distinction.

His operatic experience includes Ferrando Cosi fan tutte, Nemorino L'elisir d'amore, Eumete Il ritorno d'Ulisse, The Jester Sayat Nova, Le Fils Les mamelles de Tirésias, Ormindo in Cavalli’s Ormindo, Vašek The Bartered Bride, Laisander A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sam Kaplan Street Scene, Don Ottavio Don Giovanni, Bastien Bastien und Bastienne, Gherardo Gianni Schicchi, Richard Dauntless Ruddigore, Gomatz Zaide and Le Chevalier Dialogues des Carmélites. Stephen performed the part of Heddle Nash in Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music at Buckingham Palace in February 2017, conducted by John Wilson, and also performed Vaughan Williams’ On Wenlock Edge at Leith Hill Place in May 2017 with Dr. Natasha Loges and the Bach Quartet. Stephen joined the chorus of Glyndebourne Opera for the 2018 Festival and Tour in their productions of Madame Butterfly, Der Rosenkavalier, Saul, La Traviata and Cendrillon. In 2018, Stephen was awarded a place at the Lyon Opera Studio where he performed the roles of Giove, Eumete and Eurimaco in their production of Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria and will return in 2020 to sing the role of Voleur de Lune in Carl Orff's Der Mond and Chiroya in Thierry Escaich's Shirine.

Stephen received second place in both the Cecil Drew Oratorio Prize in 2013 and the Birmingham Conservatoire Singing prize in 2014 and reached the finals of the Les Azuriales Opera Competition in 2017, the RCM Lieder Prize in 2016, the Kathleen Ferrier Youth Competition in 2011, the Reginald Vincent Lieder Prize in 2012 and the Edward Brookes Lieder Prize in 2014.

In March 2018, he made his Wigmore Hall debut singing the roles of Mordecai and First Israelite in Handel's Esther as part of the London Handel Festival and also sang the tenor solo in Berlioz' Requiem at Birmingham Symphony Hall with the Birmingham Philharmonic in February 2018. His solo oratorio experience includes Berlioz' Requiem, Schütz' St. Matthew Passion, Bach’s Magnificat, B Minor Mass, St. John Passion, Cantata No.21 and Christmas Oratorio, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Stainer’s Crucifixion, Mozart’s C Minor Mass, Litaniae Lauretanae and Requiem, Handel’s Messiah and Esther, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Missa Sancti Nicolai and Creation, Orff's Carmina Burana, Gounod’s Messe Solennelle de Ste. Cécile, Beethoven's Mass in C and Britten’s Saint Nicolas Mass.
